Income and Housing

If you or your household have a lower income, you may find it more challenging to live in adequate housing, have access to transportation and recreation, to pursue an education or find a job and make healthy lifestyle choices. Women are more likely than men to be low income earners, to work part time, to not have worked long enough to have a pension, or to earn less for the work that they do.

Going to health appointments means that you have to take time off work and also pay for extra child care or transportation costs. Healthy foods generally cost more. There are costs to you and your children being physically active, participating in organized sports and recreational activities. Making ends meet can also be very stressful. Smoking, using alcohol and other substances may be how you try to manage your stress.

Accessing local, community and provincial resources can help you and your family to live a healthier lifestyle and to find affordable housing. Finding the resources and supports that work for you may also help you reduce your emotional stress.
